Who crawls out of the forest and what happens?

Simon crawls out of the forest and is not recognized by the boys as the firelight casts a weird shadow on him and his face and body.  Ultimately the boys fall upon Simon and begin to assault him; ultimately he falls over a rock and tumbles to the beach below.  They then attack his body and ultimately kill him.
