Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up? When Ralph confronts the group with this dilemma, and they choose the latter,do you believe that the boys are aware of the enormity of the decision they are making,or is it subconscious?

I don't think most of the boys' have the maturity to understand Ralph's plea for civility. One of Golding's major themes involves the boys subconscious drive for the darker side of human nature.
