When Simon visits his sanctuary, how does the island appear to respond to his presence?

The island seems to respond to Simon's presence by affording him a place to pray.... a kind of cathedral.

"Since they had not far to go for light the creepers had woven a great mat that hung at the side of an open space...the while space was walled in by dark aromatic bushes, and was a bowl of heat and light.
