In chapter one we first meet Ralph. He is described as being a "fair" boy. He is muscular as far as his age goes. Still he has a "mildness about him that proclaimed no devil." In chapter one he is a typical boy, excited about this island and the prospect of no adults. He jumps into ponds, ripping his clothes off with abandon. He sees, at this point, things at face value with little logical interpretation.
