The author's tone in Chapter Three is one of suspense. The boys' behavior becomes increasingly more savage, the relationships between the boys quickly change, and although a form of civilized behavior still exists, we wait for it to disappear.

At the beginning of Chapter 3, Jack is hunting the pig and you wait for suspense to find out what happens next. Tone= Suspense
