What is the significance of Ralph reflecting on his appearance at the start of chapter 7?

Whe Ralph takes the time to reflect upon his appearance, he realizes that he is unkempt..... in a way, uncivilized. Seeing the state of the other boys and looking at himself, he sees that they are moving further away from being civilized and becoming like savages.
