Yes, the scene where the 'beast' is killed and its head is imapled on a stake is the most significant scene in the novel and the movie. It is the culmination of the lack of civilization; it imbues what happens when there are no laws or organization and the world becomes barbaric. This one scene shows the viewer to what extent humanity can return to the animalistic state that once ruled so many thousands of years ago, or even still exists in tribal areas without education, technology, or any other form of modernity.
