Initially Ralph is a boy filled with wonder about being stranded on an island. He lacks Piggy's intellectual sophistication and logical thought. Piggy has been conditioned to be a victim in the old world. He desperately seeks attention and reinforcement from those he finds are safe. He is a methodical thinker. He is empathetic to the littluns who are treated badly because he has been treated the same way. He looks to Ralph to establish some kind of bond but Ralph is largely uninterested in what Piggy has to say.
