What is being personified?

Personification is a literary device in human qualities are granted to inanimate objects. It is a device used frequently by Golding.

With that word the heat seemed to increase till it became a threatening weight and the lagoon attacked them with a binding effulgence.

Although a seeming paradise, Golding gives the island a personality. It can be oppressive just as it is hospitable.
