what happens at night while the boys are asleep that has big affect on them all throughout the chapter

At night the boys can hear military aircraft doing battle in the darkness above. From that battle a dead pilot floats down who is mistakenly taken, by the twins, as the dreaded Beast hence the chapter's title "Beast from the Air".
