The beast becomes a manifestation of the evil that lies in the hearts of men:or in this case, boys. At one point Simon points out the greater theme of the novel being that any evil or beast on the island is the boys themselves, “What I mean is . . . maybe it's only us”. This revelation, of course, is lost on all of the boys.
