The events of the first two chapters immediately address the themes of civilization versus savagery and individualism versus community. From the beginning, there are two factions.... on one side, you have Ralph and Piggy, who support organization and civility. On the other side, you have Jack and the choir (the hunters) thrilled to do what they want and embracing the lack of adult authority. Ralph, as leader, also works for the good of community, whereas, Jack and the others focus on individual desires.
