Lord of the Flies

The title of this chapter is The Shell and the Glass, and the symbolism of these objects are very important part of the story. What do Piggy's glasses symbolize and why does it make sense that Jack only obtains them once they are broken?

Piggy's glasses represent Piggy's knowledge and civility. Jack can only "have" Piggy's glasses when they are not intact. The symbolism must change along with the physical state of the glasses when Jack has them.
