Jack has a personality, temperament, and agenda that is completely different from Ralph's. They are so far apart on their motivations and experience that they "walked along two continents of experience, unable to communicate". Both understand that that each have leadership qualities but are unable to reconcile the implications of how these qualities will manifest themselves in the future.
