While Ralph was blowing the conch shell, the boys noticed that "something dark was fumbling along. What immediate impression was created? What else served to reinforce that impression? Contrast this to the first sentence of the book where Ralph was introduced. Through this contrast, what was the author suggesting about Ralph and Jack?

The boys notice a black mass that looked likke an approaching creature. It is actually Jack and his choir. There is a menacing dark force. Of course, this foreshadows Jack's personality. While there is a lightness and playful hope about Ralph, Jack's appearance is filled with control and dread.
