When we first meet Percival, he is frightened and aloof. He crawled into a shelter and hid himself..... talking, singing, crying..... the other boys thought it funny. They thought he was crazy (batty). By the end of the novel, Percival no longer recites his name and address (the one thing he repeated over and over), the trauma had overtaken his mind.
