The hunt is not necessary. They could have gotten protein from fish. The boys, Jack in particular, is obsessed with killing something. He has the urge to impose his will on another living thing. Jack will begin to satisfy his obsession with pigs. The boys neglect to maintain a signal fire and a ship has passed.
