In the first paragraph of chapter two, golding writes, "the choir, noticeably less of a group, had discarded their cloaks." what does this statement convey?

This is meant to convey they represent a group belonging to Jack. Even though they discard the cloaks there is still a sense that they were once a defined group.

In the same paragraph we learn that the rest of the boys have just lately put their clothes back on because of sunburn..... I believe the shedding of the robes symbolizes the immdeiate differences between the two sets of boys and signifies which group will go their own way. The choir has separated itself almost from the start.
