Lord of the Flies

In Chapter 8 In Simon's conversation with the Lord of the Flies, the Lord of the Flies says "Fancy thinking the beast was something you could kill and hunt" why is this statement so ironic?

please help its for my summer reading!

It's ironic on a few levels. One is that Simon always knew the beat was merely a manifestation of man, "at once heroic and sick." It is also ironic that the beast is telling the one person furthest away from the darkness that the beast personifies.
