Themes in Ch. 5 include:

The irrational fear of the unknown.

The human nature of the boys leading to the destructive rather than the constructive

The humiliation of another (Piggy) as the only function that brings the boys together.

The Beast from the water alludes to their irrational fear coming from somewhere outside themselves.
