In Chapter 4 in Lord of the Flies, what does Jack have in the leaves, and what purpose does it serve?

I'm not sure what you mean by "have" in the leaves. He certainly hides in them. He builds tracks they can run on so he can ambush them. He also leaves spears to pick up when he needs them.
