Chapter 12 ends the book. It is Golding's Deus ex machine or "God in the Machine". Golding's little experiment is over. He has proved the inherent darkness of man's heart. He has demonstrated that the true hearts of people will gravitate towards the dark when given a chance. The irony is that the "Cry of the Hunters" is merely the twisted screaming of socio-pathic little children. Rather than hunters, it is the twisted soul of man.
