He tries to communicate his fear of the beastie to the other boys on the island, but he is unable to do that because they laugh at him. Even though he is speaking with the conch in his hand, he is not respected. Ultimately, he becomes one of the ones who seems consumed by the fire, but no one seems truly concerned.
