Jack is all about stabbing trees to prove his masculinity. When, for example, he fails to to stab a piglet in chapter 1 (I think) he stabs a tree to prove he means business the next time he has a chance at a kill, "He snatched his knife out of the sheath and slammed it into a tree trunk."
