Color is used symbolically throughout the text. It is used to illustrate the way the boys change throughout the novel. For example, we are introduced to Jack's hunters, who wear black robes, which is said to foreshadow their roles (hunters, murderers). Jack also has red hair..... the color of blood.
The conch shell is white..... a symbol of civilization.... peace and harmony.
As the novel progresses the colors begin to mingle. They show up in war paint and serve to terrorize, whereas, they once represented good things like food and shelter.
Demoniac figures with faces of white and red and green rushed out howling, so that the littluns fled screaming...three others stood still, watching Ralph; and he saw that the tallest of them, stark naked save for paint and a belt, was Jack.
