The characters of both novels are forced into situations in which they have no control.

Both the stranded children in the Lord of the Flies and the tributes in the Hunger Games must struggle against the elements in order to survive.

The main characters in both stories (Katniss and Raph) must battle nature, as well as other characters. Unlike Katniss, Ralph has little or no experience providing himself or others with food.

Violence and evil are ongoing themes in each novel.

Jack's hunters and many of the tributes share a joy in commiting violent acts.
