Why are the flies symbolic?

The flies feed on the decay, death and destruction of an organism: in this case a sow's head. The whole fragile system the boys have created is disintegrating. The flies symbolize the darkness in man's (or boys') heart. The Latin translation is Beelzebub or the Devil.
