Ralph declared it to be a rotten place, and that was BEFORE Jack made the gesture of how easily someone could be heaved off the side.

The cave offers no hope of rescue. Ralph does not believe in the Beast. The other boys see Castle Rock as a place to play. Ralph's focus is on rescue and keeping up the fire.
