At first Jack and the hunters mock Percival and the littluns who fear and cry about the beast. This fear, however, is contagious and starts to filter into the biggins, including the hunters. Ralph earnestly tries to convince the boys that there is no such thing as a beast but their fear does not understand Ralph's logic. It takes Jack humiliating Piggy to snap the boys out of their fear.
