Simon goes into the jungle alone because he prefers solitude.
The Littluns carry firewood and such.

The littluns are picking fruit in this chapter, and Simon goes into the forest to get some time to himself. He wants to enjoy the beauty of the forest.

Really the Littluns are left alone. They are seen as useless, they basically live in their own world.

I don't think picking fruit was the Littlun's job as the question asked. The Littluns just sort of ate it and had chronic diarrhea.
