what is the end of innocence and the darkness of man’s heart ‘that Ralph weeps for?

Ralph's experiences have left him without hope..... a darkness of the heart. He weeps for what the boys have become...... and he weeps for his own innocence and belief in the goodness of man. It is a sense of hopelessness in what should be the face of hope.
