Sam and Eric identify themselves as one person. This is effective in this case because it allows them to claim they were both not present at Simon's death. Piggy attempts to dismiss the Death of Simon by placing the blame on Simon for coming out in the darkness. Piggy insists it was a mistake. By using "we", Golding allows the boys to hide behind a collective defense rather than individual responsibility.
