Lord of the Flies

At the bottom of page 92, we see that Jack says "Eat! Damn you!...Take it!". Who is he saying this to? What does he want them to eat? Why do you think Jack wants people to eat what he hunted?

Jack is saying this to Simon. Simon has given his meat to Piggy. Jack has meant to withhold meat from Piggy as a sign of his authority. Simon, however, is not afraid of Jack in the same way the other boys are afraid of him. Simon has no personal fear of Jack. He does what his conscience directs him to. This frustrates Jack because he cannot bully Simon. Simon fears Jack hurting other boys rather than himself. Remember, Golding has made Simon the Christ-figure of the story.
