We can interpret it as the force of darkness that Golding believes is embedded in mankind. Given the chance, man will turn towards darkness rather than good. Simon is confronting his own darkness in this scene. Being Golding's Christ-figure, he is able to overcome this darkness. He will attempt to save the boys from themselves.
