6. Note the passages narrating Simon's experience with the Lord of the Flies (151-152 and 157-159; 170-171 and 177-178), the exact nature of which has often been debated. Here are some questions people have considered:

A) Is this episode all in Simon's mind or his imagination? Is the pig's head actually speaking to Simon?

B) Is there someone hiding in the bushes actually speaking to Simon? Is Simon losing (or has he lost) his sanity?

C) Is Simon seeing a vision shared with him by some supernatural power?

D) Is Satan, the Devil, speaking to Simon?

E) Is the Lord of the Flies, the Beast, some invisible force?

F) Now, your turn: what, do you think, is the Lord of the Flies?

I think that Golding asks the reader to consider a metaphysical context here. At the very least, we can accept that the conversation is happening inside Simon's head. Simon is a Christ-figure in the narrative so it is understandable that he struggles, literally or metaphorically, with the darker side of humanity.
