Ralph stares out at the ocean – he’s now on the other side of the island, no longer shielded by the lagoon. This, of course, is hugely meaningful to him. It represents physically and symbolically the two tribes, mindsets and moral codes. Ralph realizes the huge split between responsibility and chaos. He realizes that what he once thought was a “good” island is not the case anymore.
