Jack is trying to undermine Ralph's authority and bring about a change in leadership. Jack desperately wants to be "elected" chief for the sake of his ego and hunger for power. He tries pointing out Ralph's perceived character flaws and links Ralph to Piggy, a character most boys on the island look down upon.
