Day 5 - Reading Assignment, Questions, Vocabulary
Students read chapters 11-12.
Daily Lesson Objectives
• Reading well: appreciating the achievement of the author by examining how each theme culminates and interlocks with other themes, and how the author combines tone, feelings, and suspense, to carry the reader’s interest; carefully examining the details of the confrontation that leads to Piggy’s death in order to examine the trajectory of the boys’ devolution on the island.
• Thinking well: using the discussion questions to draw conclusions from evidence and to consider why most of the boys succumb to Jack’s savage lifestyle and irrationally violent choices, rather than adhering to Ralph’s more orderly authority; understanding the symbolism and significance of the Lord of the Flies and the beast; examining how Ralph himself changes in the last chapter as he is hunted; and considering the naval officer’s perception of the little boys.
• Speaking well: developing oral skills through vocabulary development, presentation, and group discussion.
• Listening well: developing a taste for good grammar and strong diction; evaluating oral presentations to understand other students’ interpretations of the Lord of the Flies and the novel’s significance.
• Writing well: creating an introspective, thoughtful journal entry that reflects a thorough understanding of the character development and plot.
• Understanding: seeing how themes of violence, loss of innocence, power, and civilization versus savagery (man’s baser instincts) are reflected in Golding’s allegorical novel.
