I am helping my son with understanding the story. What ideas did these symbols represent. Piggy's glasses, the conch, the beast, the huts and the Lord of the Flies. Thanks for any help you can bring to me.

Read the ClassicNote on this website. It's highly valuable.
Piggy's glasses = true vision. As they break down, so does sense.
The conch = order. It becomes more and more fragile and is finally shattered with the death of Piggy.
The beast = our inner wildness and resistance to social and moral order. It is very strong in Jack and Roger.
Huts = a home. The boys succeed in building only a few, and one is very tottery. They have to work together to build them, and Ralph cannot make them keep working.
The Lord of the Flies = evil. Satan is called Beelzebub in the Bible, and that word means "Bal (deity) of the Flies." Only Simon sees that the Beast is really within us . . . and when he tries to tell this truth to the boys, they kill him. They don't want to know the truth.
