Why does Mr. Laurence encourage Beth to play the piano when he does not support Laurie?

Mr. Lawrence disapproved of Laurie's mother, who was a musician. Marmee believes that Mr. Lawrence is afraid his grandson wants to become a musician like his mother.

Mr. Lawrence enjoys Beth's playing because she reminds him of his granddaughter who died.
