What decision has Amy made concerning Fred? How does she justify it to her mother?

Amy tells her family that if Fred should propose she would accept NOT because she loved him, but because it would improve the financial problems in her family. She doesn't want to be like Meg (poor), so marrying someone she could tolerate and having money to go with it...... that would make it tolerable.
