Explain why Christmas for the March family was both happy and sad?

Christmas was happy because the girls were together..... with their mother. They made it a happy day. Christmas, none-the-less, was also sad..... their father was away serving as a chaplain in the Union army and wasn't with them. Fortunately, they had a letter from Mr. March (father) that they all enjoyed.
