Ma is a person who knows how to work and with the Lord's help will help her family survive. Ma does not fit the typical female role during this time in history for she goes out into the community asking to help and to work and does not take no for an answer. Most women of this period in history did what their husbands told them to and this was homemaking and childcare. Ma worked the farm with Pa for they were a team.
