Tita initially works on the bedspread to battle the "cold" she feels inside. It is a symbol of her need for love and warmth in a relationship. As the novel progresses she transitions her "work" on the blanket into other forms of domesticity. Thus we see her maturing throughout the novel and taking on each of the roles she believes are needed as a wife and homemaker.
