What prompted father to give his sons a lesson about the dangers of animals?

The boys see all animals as cuddly...... not at all resembling the dangerous beasts that they are. In order to teach his sons about the dangerous natures of predatory animals, he makes the boys watch a tiger devour a goat. Pi's response....... "Life goes on and you don't touch tigers."
