Pondicherry is an "anomaly" in the sense that it provides its citizens with unique opportunities to be integrated into a variety of cultures. Of course, Pi himself experiences this as a "member" of Judaism, Christianity and Islam at the same time (although this angers the leaders of the respective houses of worship).
