If Pi ate the algae that grows in toxic waters, shouldn't he be poisoned?

For some reason Pi is okay, perhaps because he ate it during the day. He discovers that by night, the algae leaches a deadly acid that kills the fish in the pools where they are dissolved and ingested by the plants.
