Discuss some of Pi's survial techniques

Pi is pretty knowledgeable at what not to do. He knows dehydration will take him far before starvation. He also knows that sea water is not safe to drink. Pi does things like catch rain water he is also correct that turtle blood is a safe method of hydration, and there is also potable liquid in fish eyes and fish spinal fluid. Although some fish can be poisonous, generally fish that are available when you cannot see land are safe. He also uses solar stills. A solar still is a low-tech way of distilling water, powered by the heat of the sun. Pi also knows well enough to keep his distance from Richard Parker.
