The title, 1493 (not 1943) distracts us from our preconcieved notions about Columbus and his "discovery" of America. The majority of people know that Columbus dicovered the New World in 1492, but that's about all they know or remember. 1493 reflects on what Columbus did after he discovered it. Lies My Teacher Told Me states that most textbooks don't mention what Columbus did in the New World other than bring back riches. In the chapter, 1493, the author teaches that Columbus began a slave trade and conquered the natives treating them horribly. This information contradicts the common portrayal of Columbus.
