The confederate myth is that Republican rule was oppressive and that reconstruction was a failure for African Americans because they couldn't integrate into society. In reality Republicans were promoting equality and African Americans accomplished a lot, but many racist whites were still working against them. According to Loewen it is important to focus on white treatment of African Americans because it shows why certain races are more likely to live in poverty while whites often have more opportunities. It's important to learn about because it shows their was racism and still is racism in America.
